14 Dec. 1948 – 8 March 2020

We have recently learnt with immense sadness of the passing of Johnny Veeder. With Johnny, arbitration has lost one of its greatest minds and most generous personalities. We all remember his brightness, his immense talent, his profound understanding of different cultures, and his exquisite sense of humor.

Johnny also had a vision for arbitration: the duty of good faith of counsel, the ethics of all players and the transparency of the process as fundamental conditions for the survival of our practice. Johnny was also a dedicated scholar, a passionate professor, an inspired editor, a great leader of many institutions, amongst which of course the LCIA, an historian, and countless other things. He was humble, gentle and always accessible.

There will be many commemorations, articles in his honour, and we will have many opportunities to pay tribute to Johnny. He was a towering figure to whom we are all indebted, and whose legacy will illuminate many generations to come. An example that each and every one of us will endeavor to follow. The entire Court sends its deepest condolences to his wife, his children, his entire family and his friends.
